David Willetts Exit Interview

David Willetts Exit Interview

Earlier this month, the Board of the NCUB awarded their Annual Fellowship to David Willetts, former universities and sciences minister.

I first met David in the atrium café at Portcullis House – the offices across the road from Parliament – in the spring of 2009 and it was obvious even then that he cared deeply about how small companies can get a leg up through engaging with universities. And, as he says in this interview, his experience of his constituents struggling to get work experience led him to focus on the importance of placements and sandwich courses.

It was David who asked us, our strategic partners, and our supporters to come up with a plan to establish the National Centre, and I went to his office to present him with his fellowship and ask him for some reflections on the past five years.
