BIS tasks National Centre to work with partners to advance a national brokerage platform to connect universities and business, and support the work of Local Enterprise Partnerships

'British Invention: Global Impact', the Government respond to Sir Andrew Witty's Review of Universities and Growth

Dr David Docherty, CEO of the NCUB, said today: 'Turning world class university inventiveness into successful business innovation is vital to ensuring local term growth in the UK. And the NCUB welcomes the opportunity offered by the Government to work with businesses, particularly SMEs, to help bring this about.'

The National Centre for Universities and Business welcomes the UK Government's response to Sir Andrew Witty's review of Universities and Growth. As called for in recommendation two, the NCUB will continue to promote business engagement with university research, and our ongoing work in developing a brokerage service to connect businesses with university research alongside our partners RCUK, HEFCE and Technology Strategy Board. And we will work with the Government and others to develop an Advisory Hub for Smart Specialisation to support the work of Local Economic Partnerships.

Encouraging a British Invention Revolution: Sir Andrew Witty’s Review of Universities and Growth was published in October 2013. NCUB hosted a launch event for the report with a presentation by Sir Andrew Witty, NCUB CEO David Docherty and Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills Vince Cable.

Sir Andrew Witty delivered the 2013 NCUB Annual Lecture in November on the subject of his review, as quoted in David Willetts' foreword to the government response published today.

About the National Centre for Universities and Business

The National Centre for Universities and Business (NCUB) develops, promotes and supports world-class collaboration between universities and business across the UK. Our aim is to find practical ways of harnessing the talent being developed in our universities, and the UK’s strength in ground-breaking research and development, for the benefit of the nation’s economy.

Drawing on the 25 years’ experience of our predecessor body, the Council for Industry and Higher Education (CIHE), NCUB is committed to a programme of research, policy development and practical partnerships. From facilitating collaborative R&D, to developing the entrepreneurial and employability skills of students at all stages of their education, NCUB is working to support UK business and higher education in a competitive global market.

NCUB’s Leadership Council includes many of the UK’s most successful businesses and universities.
