In June 2013, the National Centre for Product Design and Developmental Research (PDR) at Cardiff Met invited 25 design professionals from Poland to PDR to learn about service design through a live project with Cardiff Council.
The brief was around encouraging more cycling in the city and ensuring cyclists are safe and responsible on the roads. In just four days, students undertook research around the city, created design prototypes and presented them to the council, learning about user focused design.
This practical learning task helped develop immediately transferable skills, one example of higher education creating skills for employment in new ways.
One student commented that “Every time we had lessons I learnt new stuff. There’s stuff I can use when I start work.”
